History of MACS

Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools (MACS) began in the fall of 1992. This marked the bringing together of six Catholic schools in Charlotte to form one school system. The two main goals of this regionalization was to improve the quality of education that our Catholic school childres receive and to make that quality education available to more of our Catholic children and the community as a whole. At that time many of these children were not able to enroll in Catholic schools, given space limitations.

This represented a dramatic change for Catholic schools, changing from a parished based school to a system. This change however provided the flexibility in managing the resources for the schools in facilities, personnel, educational programs, transportation and parish subsidy and tuition that was needed to achieve the stated goals.

What we see today are 8 schools that operate under the same currulim, the same tuition structure, and the same personnel requirements. A parent can be assured that the same quality educational experience is being offered at all 6 elementary schools and this consistency of education is carried over to the high school and middle school. Opportunities are opened up with a regional transportation system the opens up all the schools availablity to the families of the area.

MACS has proven to be successful and has become a model for many Catholic Schools across the nation. While many Catholic Schools are suffering declining enrollment MACS has shown steady growth since its beginning growing from 2,300 students to almost 5,000.
